OSCARS 2017: La La… Moonlight

OSCARS 2017: La La… Moonlight

The Academy Awards came and went with the usual and unusual levels of normalcy.

The 89th Academy Awards took place on Feb 26th in Hollywood California. Most times it just a night that Hollywood celebrates their best and brightest and honestly this year was mostly that. Jimmy Kimmel, did a decent job at hosting the night. There were some fun jokes and while some of them may have cut people the wrong way, it was mostly entertaining. His gags and the planned situations, however, made the show feel like an extended episode of his talk show. Whether it was from the Mean Tweets to his feud with Matt Damon there was a commonality brought to the show. Whether it was needed or not, I believe not but there is a precedent to say that it was needed when there were so many other larger issues on everyone’s mind. The musical performances were all good but the missing one, which I wanted after hearing him speak was Dwayne Johnson because seeing him perform must be magical. As well Seth Rogan rocking those Back to the Future Nikes was legendary.

As for our picks, above you will see our charts for the night with all the categories, who won and our point total. At the end of the night, our home arena winner was Phillip E. with 11 out of the 24 categories, Suneel M. with 10, Jeff T. with 5 and Yerro G. with 5. For me, the biggest surprise came in with Hacksaw Ridge winning in the category of film editing as well as Suicide Squad now being the first superhero film to win an Oscar. Gives that DC vs Marvel fights uneven odds. Overall most of the acting categories seem to go as predicted and while La La Land did win 6 awards a couple of them could be contested.

And just a quick mention if you haven’t been on the internet. The La La Land, Moonlight fiasco at the end was something else. We had already marked it down on the chart and had named our winner when the truth came out and we had some point changes. It didn’t move the standings but it definitely was a memorable moment. Even though I loved Moonlight and it is what I wanted to win, I had La La Land down on my ballot. So you win some and lose some but both films are great so in the end, nothing to complain.
